What is the Best Order to Teach Onset and Rime

Following a sequence and systematically teaching each word family, you will provide your students with the tools they need to become proficient readers and writers. Here is a suggested sequence to teach onset and rime to your students:

  1. Begin with simple and common rimes. Short ‘a’ vowel rimes and short e vowel rimes as they are simpler for children to grasp.
  2. Once students are comfortable with the initial set, introduce more short vowel rimes to expand their repertoire such as the short ‘i’ vowel rimes.
  3. Gradually move to slightly more complex rimes such as the short ‘o’ vowel rimes and short u vowel rimes.
  4. Introduce rimes with blends and digraphs.
