What is the Best Order to Teach Onset and Rime
Following a sequence and systematically teaching each word family, you will provide your students with the tools they need to become proficient readers and writers. Here is a suggested sequence to teach onset and rime to your students:
- Begin with simple and common rimes. Short ‘a’ vowel rimes and short e vowel rimes as they are rimplier for children to grasp.
- Once students are comfortable with the initial set, introduce more short vowel rimes to expand their repertoire such as the short ‘i’ vowel rimes.
- Gradually move to slightly more complex rimes such as the short ‘o’ vowel rimes and short u vowel rimes.
- Introduce rimes with blends and digraphs.
