Fractions in Formation: The Art of Ordering Unit Fractions

This set of cut-and-paste worksheets has students ordering unit fractions, a foundational skill in your young mathematicians journey of comprehending fractions and their interrelations. By being able to arrange unit fractions in order, students will gain insight into the relative size and magnitude of fractions. This skill allows them to discern which fractions are larger or smaller than others, laying the groundwork for a more profound comprehension of fractions as numbers positions along a number line.

A set of four worksheets including the following to order:

  • One worksheet where students order visual representations of fractions – this worksheet allows for students to colour in a unit fraction on each shape also.
  • One worksheet where students order unit fractions.

How to Use These Unit Fraction Cut-and-Paste Worksheets

While these cut-and-paste worksheets still work perfectly well as cut and paste worksheets, they are extremely versatile and can be used in a number of different ways in the classroom. Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Turn it into a sorting activity where the fractions are already cut up ready and students need to then order them from smallest to largest – the best thing about this suggestion is you can differentiate to suit the needs of your students, making ir harder or easier by either adding more options or taking a few away.
  • Play a classroom game where you hand out each of the fractions and students need to get in order themselves holding the card they have been given.
  • Create a large number line on the floor and get students to order the mini cards on the number line.
