Practise mapping out words using an orthographic mapping template and word cards

Word Mapping Template + Word Cards

This orthographic mapping template and word cards are a valuable resource for teachers looking to support their students’ literacy development. Orthographic mapping is the process of connecting sounds, spelling patterns, and meaning in the brain, which is essential for becoming a skilled reader and writer.

This resource includes a template for students to practise orthographic mapping by breaking down words into their component sounds and spelling patterns. The template provides a framework for students to organise their thinking and make connections between sounds and spellings.

In addition to the template, the resource also includes a set of word cards.

How to Use this Resource

In small groups, provide each student with a mat and put the pack of cards in the middle of the group. Students pick a word and then use a dry-erase marker or counter to count the phonemes on the popper image. Then they write the word in the same row.

Alternatively, you could use this as a class activity by providing each student with a photocopy of the mat. They can then colour in the bubbles to count the phonemes in words the teacher chose. Teachers will guide students to complete the entire page and work on one word as a class.
