Explore Paragraph Structure for Information Reports
Paragraphs are an essential component of information reports. Paragraphs help organise information logically, making it easier for readers to follow and understand the content. When each paragraph focuses on a single idea or topic, information can be easily digested by the reader without confusion.
This poster and planning template has been designed by the Teach Starter team to help students understand the significance of well-structured paragraphs in information reports and guide them in crafting clear and coherent informative paragraphs.
Poster
The content on the poster is as follows:
- Introduce the subject using a clear topic sentence.
- State facts about the subject in a logical order.
- Describe the subject using appropriate technical vocabulary.
- Conclude with a statement about the subject.
- Focus on only one aspect of the subject per paragraph.
Planning Template
The planning template contains boxes for students to record the following:
- Introductory sentence
- Fact 1
- Fact 2
- Fact 3
- Concluding sentence
How to Use This Poster and Planning Template
Read on for some suggestions as to how you might shape a writing lesson around this information report paragraph structure poster and planning template!
- Introduction to Informative Writing – Begin your lesson by discussing the purpose and importance of informative writing. Use the poster to explain how paragraphs play a vital role in organising and presenting information.
- Poster Discussion – Highlight the key components of an informative paragraph using the poster. Discuss each component in detail, providing examples and encouraging students to ask questions.
- Topic Brainstorm – As a class, brainstorm some potential topics for an information report. Vote on a topic to be the focus of the writing activity, or allow the students to choose a topic that they are familiar with or that interests them.
- Paragraph Planning – Hand out the planning templates to students. Have them work in small groups, pairs or individually to plan a paragraph based on the chosen topic. Emphasise the importance of planning a clear topic sentence, relevant supporting details and a concise concluding sentence.
- Paragraph Writing – In their workbooks, have students flesh out their plan to write a complete paragraph about their chosen topic.
- Review and Feedback – Collect and review the students’ paragraphs, providing constructive feedback. Use the poster as a reference to highlight strengths and areas for improvement in their writing.
