Help children partition 2-digit numbers by identifying the place value of the tens and ones with this matching activity.
Partitioning Numbers Two Digit Card Game
This set of cards has been created to help students understand partitioning two-digit numbers and the importance of grouping in tens. Students need to partition a range of two-digit numbers by connecting them with their corresponding tens and ones cards. For example, the number 62 will be partitioned by place value into 60 and 2.
This teaching resource download includes the following cards:
- 12 two-digit number cards.
- 12 corresponding one-digit number cards
- 12 corresponding two-digit number cards
- 12 addition symbol cards
- 12 equal symbol cards
The idea is that students will need to choose a two-digit number (purple cards), pop down the equals symbol, find the matching tens number (orange card), and matching ones card (green card), with the addition symbol between the last two cards. The addition and equals sign symbolises how the two-digit number can be broken down into tens and ones to create an addition sum.
Partitioning by Place Value Aids Number Sense
Teaching students to partition reinforces the concept of place value, showing the importance of each digit in a number. Using card games like this to allow students to practise partitioning by place value allows them to develop a deeper sense of how numbers can be manipulated and combined.
