Teach the Parts of a Letter

Structure is an important part of any text type. It is particularly important when it comes to letter writing, as there are certain conventions that need to be followed.

To help your students learn the essential components of writing a letter, the Teach Starter team has created this colourful and age-appropriate poster pack. Each poster includes an example letter with one key part clearly marked, making it easy for students to see how the elements work together. By visually reinforcing these components, students can quickly grasp how letters are structured, helping them build confidence in both formal and informal letter writing.

This parts of a letter poster pack covers the following parts of a letter:

  • Heading
  • Date
  • Greeting
  • Body
  • Closing
  • Signature
  • Postscript
  • Envelope (two versions available)

This resource is available as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file. If you have limited colour printing available at your school, we recommend printing in greyscale on coloured paper.

Using These Parts of a Letter Examples in Your Lessons

While this parts of a letter poster pack makes a great classroom display, it can be used in other ways to support your teaching of letter writing. Here are a handful of ideas from our team:

  1. Introduction to Letter Writing – Use the posters as a visual guide when introducing students to letter-writing formats. Discuss each part and its purpose while referring to the example letter on the posters.
  2. Identification Game – Cover the titles of each poster, then have the students take turns to identify and name each part of the example letter.
  3. Independent Writing Support – Print smaller versions of posters (with multiple posters to one page) and provide these to the students. This resource can be used as a reference when students are writing letters independently.
