Strengthen student understanding of decimal place value and the relationship between place value positions with this instructional slide deck.
Explore Place Value with Decimals
Do your students understand how different place value positions are related? Students learn from an early age the name of different places in a number line, such as the ones, tens and hundreds place. As they enter upper primary, students begin to develop a more in-depth understanding of how values increase and decrease as they move left and right on a place value chart.
Teach Starter has created a teaching presentation to help your students understand the relationship between different place value positions, including numbers that include decimals. During this presentation, students will:
- Review place value positions
- Understand the relationship of how numbers increase or decrease with Base 10 blocks
- Explore what happens to a number when a decimal point is moved right or left
- Determine numbers that are ten times greater and 1/10 of a given decimal
The presentation also includes several student activities to help you monitor how your class is grasping the content and to make sure they remain focused throughout the lesson.
This presentation downloads as either a Microsoft PowerPoint or a Google Slides document. Be sure to operate the presentation in Slideshow mode.
Differentiate This Decimal Place Value Activity
Teaching presentations are a fabulous resource when it comes to introducing new topics to your students. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of decimal place, providing your students with a solid foundation upon which to build their knowledge of what happens to a number when the decimal point is moved right or left.
If you’re looking for ideas to support and extend students when engaging with this slideshow, the Teach Starter team has you covered!
- Support students who may find the presentation overwhelming by chunking up the content into small parts. These students may also benefit from having access to a decimal place value chart.
- Extend students by having them create their own decimal chart using a decimal of their choice. Have them increase the value of their chosen decimal by 100 times and decrease the value by 1/100.
