A Personal Pronouns Activity for the Early Years

When it comes to the early years, hands-on learning is a must! This tactile matching activity makes learning about personal pronouns interactive and engaging for young learners.

To play:

  1. Choose a sentence card and read it aloud.
  2. Identify the noun/s in the sentence that need to be replaced with a pronoun.
  3. Find the correct personal pronoun card to replace the noun/s.
  4. Place the card over the top of the nouns being replaced to complete the sentence.

Example: Tim is writing a story becomes He is writing a story.

The resource download includes:

  • Instruction page
  • 18 x sentence cards
  • 18 x personal pronoun cards
  • Answer key

This resource downloads as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file.

This hands-on activity makes learning about personal pronouns dynamic, helping students to grasp the concept in a playful and practical way.

Game Ideas for This Personal Pronouns Activity

There are many engaging ways the personal pronoun matching cards can be used in your grammar lessons. Here are a few suggestions you might like to try:

  1. Pronoun Pairs – Have students play a memory-style game by placing all the sentence cards and pronoun cards face down. Students take turns flipping over one of each, trying to find the correct sentence-pronoun pair.
  2. Pronoun Relay – Set up two or more teams. Place the sentence cards on one side of the room and the pronoun cards on the other. Students must run to the sentence cards, grab one and then run back to select the correct pronoun card to complete the sentence. The first team to match all their cards correctly wins!
  3. Pronoun Swap – Once students have matched a sentence card with the correct pronoun, challenge them to swap the personal pronoun with a different one and see if they can create a new sentence that still makes sense. This helps deepen their understanding of how pronouns can change based on context.
