Personal Pronouns Peg Cards for the Early Years

Personal pronouns, such as ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘they’, are words used to replace nouns and refer to people or things. They help sentences flow smoothly and avoid repetition.

To help introduce your youngest learners to this important grammar concept, the Teach Starter team has created this set of 24 peg cards. This resource is designed to help students develop their understanding of personal pronouns in a fun and interactive way.

Each of the 24 peg cards features a picture and three personal pronoun options. Students look at the picture, then choose which pronoun best matches the picture by placing a clothes peg on their answer.

The resource download includes:

  • Instruction page
  • 24 x peg cards
  • Answer key

This resource downloads as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file.

This hands-on activity engages young learners and encourages independent thinking as they practise using personal pronouns in context.

Using These Personal Pronouns Cards in Your Lessons

These versatile peg cards can be used in a variety of ways in your grammar lessons. Here are some ideas from our teacher team:

  1. Classroom Stations – Set up a grammar station with the peg cards as part of a rotating activity. This provides a practical and interactive way for students to reinforce their pronoun knowledge.
  2. Partner Work – Students can work with a partner to complete the peg cards, discussing their choices as they go. This promotes collaboration and allows for peer learning.
  3. Exit Ticket – Use the peg cards as an exit ticket to gauge how well students understand personal pronouns, helping to identify areas that may need further review.
