Phoneme Deletion Activity for Small Group Work

This engaging set of phoneme deletion task cards is designed by an experienced teacher to help students build phonemic awareness by removing specific phonemes to form new words. Each card presents a word and a prompt for students to delete a designated phoneme.

Working in pairs, students can use a recording sheet to write the resulting word. For students who aren’t ready to focus on writing, voice recording the new word provides an effective alternative, allowing them to concentrate fully on phoneme manipulation without the additional challenge of spelling.

Example of Phoneme Deletion

Each phoneme deletion card includes an example of phoneme deletion and provides a clear example to guide students through the process of removing sounds to make new words. For instance, a card might show a picture of a “bat” with instructions: “Say the word. Delete the /b/. What is the new word?” Following this prompt, students identify that the new word is “at.”

This type of hands-on, interactive example helps students grasp the concept of phoneme deletion and develop their phonemic awareness in an engaging way.
