Phoneme Manipulation Activity for Group Work
These phoneme manipulation interactive task cards have been created by a teacher to provide students with practise in developing their phonemic awareness by manipulation phonemes.
In each task card, students are provided a word to read – with a matching image. Then they are prompted to change either the initial, medial or end sound in a simple CVC word and then choose the correct image that matches the new word they have created.
For example, the word mat is provided, students are to change the /m/ to a /h/ – hat and then choose the picture of the hat. If they choose incorrectly – they are prompted to try again.
Manipulate Phonemes to Build Strong Phonemic Awareness
This set of interactive task cards helps guide students through the process of manipulating phonemes by changing beginning, middle, or ending sounds in simple words. This hands-on approach supports auditory learning, making them ideal for early readers developing foundational literacy skills.
Breaking down phoneme manipulation into sub categories makes it easier to ensure you are helping your students to build the foundations for phonological awareness. The three main ones to cover are:
- Phoneme addition
- Phoneme deletion
- Phoneme substitution
This particular activity focuses on phoneme substitution.
