What is a Physical Property of Matter?
A physical property of matter is a feature that can be observed or measured without changing the substance’s original form. These properties help us describe and classify different types of matter. Common physical properties include:
- Colour – the visual appearance or hue of a substance
- Mass – the amount of matter in an object, often measured in grams or kilograms
- Volume – the amount of space an object occupies
- Density – the mass per unit volume of a substance, often described as how “heavy” or “light” an object feels
- Texture – how the surface of a substance feels (e.g., smooth, rough)
- And more!

This set of thirteen printable posters is a valuable addition to any science classroom, providing clear and accessible explanations of the basic properties of matter.
Each poster highlights a different property—colour, shape, size, texture, state of matter, hardness, magnetism, relative density, transparency, odour, temperature, material, and lustre.
Each poster includes a brief, student-friendly explanation of the property, along with four visual examples and accompanying descriptive terms to help students recognise and discuss the properties as they apply to real-world objects. These visually attractive posters make a great reference tool to reinforce learning and support student understanding of matter’s observable properties.
