Two Digit Number Place Value Activity

Use this teaching resource in the classroom to explore place value and help students understand that two-digit numbers are comprised of tens and ones. Choose between a MABs spinner and a 0 to 9-digit number spinner. Print, cut out, and laminate a ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ spinner, and attach the arrows with a brass fastener.

Place students into small groups. Provide each group with a ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ spinner and each student with a worksheet. Students spin the ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ spinners and record the two-digit number they have made on their worksheets.

How Do MABs Help with Place Value?

MABs are an effective manipulative when students are learning about place value. By using this resource along with Base-10 blocks for students to manipulate, you are providing an extremely tactile activity. As students group and ungroup the blocks, they can see how each digit in the two-digit number represents a specific place value.

Also, as the Base-10 blocks come in different sizes, they represent the ones and tens visually and physically, demonstrating how numbers are composed of different place values.
