Demonstrate Place Value Understanding With S.T.E.M. Activities!
In today’s ever-changing classroom, it’s critical for students to build a strong foundation with place value concepts. We also know that today’s students are different and that sometimes you’ve got to shake things up to keep them interested. That’s where S.T.E.M. activities come in! Bringing real-life, hands-on elements into your maths lessons helps students understand more challenging concepts and demonstrate their knowledge in a fun way.
Place Value Assessment + PBL = Fun!
This resource download includes everything you need to create an engaging project-based learning (PBL) experience for students needing to demonstrate their ability to read, write, and model three-digit numbers in multiple forms. Starting with a fun scenario, students are guided through the process to show what they know!
- Scenario Overview
Your neighbourhood is building a new community centre, and they want a student to design it. Using the MAB blocks provided, create a building design to submit to the construction company.
- The Task
Create your building using the MAB blocks provided. Use this building to answer the place value questions.
Students will use the enclosed templates, cutouts, and worksheets to design a new community centre using MAB blocks. They will then apply their knowledge of place value and number forms by completing a variety of tasks using the number they created. This resource includes the following pages:
- Project Introduction, Scenario, and Instructions
- Building Design Planning Sheet
- Two sheets of MAB block cutouts (tens, hundreds and ones)
- Place Value Application Worksheet
- Peer Comparison Place Value Activity
