Teach position words with these interactive digital clip cards, designed to help young learners master prepositions.

Make Learning Position Words Fun and Engaging

Understanding position words is a fundamental skill that helps young learners describe spatial relationships. These digital clip cards will help your students learn the most common position words in a collaborative and engaging way.

This resource features 16 digital clip cards (two clip cards per slide). Each clip card presents a simple prepositions-based image along with three position word answer choices. The students must look at the image and decide which is correct, then drag a star icon over the correct answer.

Some of the position words featured in this resource are:

  • Below
  • Above
  • Around
  • Behind
  • Between
  • And many more!

This resource downloads as an editable Google Slides file. Simply project it onto your screen, and you have a ready-made activity for exploring position words. A printable PDF containing the answers is also available via a separate dropdown.

Multiple Uses for This Positional Language Resource

These position words clip cards make a great addition to any lesson on prepositions. And the best part is, they can be used in multiple ways to engage your students.

Here are some games you might like to try while using this resource with your students:

  • Simon Says – After identifying each preposition, reinforce its meaning by having students act out a “Simon Says!” instruction. For example, if the students have just identified the proposition “above,” you might ask them to put their hands above their heads.
  • Object Positioning – Have students place two simple items of stationery on their desks, e.g. a book and a pencil. After identifying a preposition, have the students demonstrate this using the two objects. For example, if the students have just identified the proposition “next to,” ask them to put the book next to the pencil.
  • Show Me – Before using the clip cards, provide each student with a mini whiteboard and a whiteboard marker. Work through each clip card as a class, having students write what they think is the correct preposition on their whiteboard and revealing their response before sharing the answer.
