A Possessive Pronouns Activity for the Early Years

Teach your students about some of the most commonly used possessive pronouns with a hands-on sorting activity perfect for group work.

This resource includes 24 colourful sort cards, each featuring a picture and a sentence with a missing possessive pronoun. Students are required to look at the picture, read the sentence, then work out whether the missing pronoun is ‘his’, ‘hers’ or ‘theirs’.

Here are some example sentences taken from the resource:

Using This Possessive Pronouns Activity in Your Lessons

This possessive pronouns activity is a fun and engaging way to teach students about these key parts of speech. Here are some creative and enjoyable activities you could incorporate into your lesson plan:

1. Small Group Sorting Challenge – Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of sort cards. The groups can race to see who can correctly sort all of the cards the fastest. Afterwards, discuss the answers.
2. Pronoun Relay – Set up the three headings (his, hers, theirs) at different spots around the classroom. Have students take turns picking a sort card and running to place it under the correct heading. This adds movement to the lesson and makes learning more dynamic.
3. Sentence Extension – After sorting the cards, challenge students to extend the sentences. For example, if they sorted the sentence “Whose bed? It is his,” they can expand it to “Whose bed? It is his. He sleeps in it every night.” This helps students practise pronouns in a broader context.
