What is Dia de Los Muertos? Let’s Find Out!

Before you can integrate Dia de Los Muertos activities, you have to learn about them! While creating this Dia de Los Muerto activity for primary school students, we discovered many facts about the Day of the Dead.

The Day of the Dead is known as Dia de Los Muertos in Spanish. This is a significant Mexican holiday that honours the memories and lives of those who have passed away. It’s a time when families come together to reminisce about their loved ones who have left this world. During this period, people decorate their homes with candles and blossoms and create an ofrenda (also known as an altar) where they can place offerings. The celebration is held on November 1st, the day when the dead were believed to return from their graves, and it lasts for two days. People clean and embellish graves with marigolds and other flowers and leave colourful offerings like sugar skulls, candles, and toys on the graves.
