A Procedural Writing Template for Every Occasion!

When it comes to procedural writing, there can be many subtle variations in the structural elements we would like our students to include. Some procedural texts require an equipment list, for example; others may not. Some procedures benefit from visual elements such as diagrams; for other procedures, these features aren’t necessary. Some students require support when it comes to adding language features such as transitional words; other students are capable of adding these features themselves. 

To help you cater will all of these variations (and more!), the Teach Starter team has created the ultimate pack of procedural writing graphic organisers. With ten different options to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect template to suit each of your student’s needs. Each graphic organiser is slightly different and contains a unique combination of structural features. These include:

Choose the graphic organizer that best meets the needs of your lesson and your class, or provide different graphic organisers to different groups of learners based on their ability.

Suggested Uses for These Procedural Writing Templates

This resource may be simple, but it has multiple applications when it comes to teaching procedural writing to your students! Here are just a few ways our task cards can be used in the classroom:

1. Modelled Writing – Project one of the procedural writing templates onto your interactive whiteboard for whole-class modeled writing activities. Fill in the sections collaboratively as a class to create a simple procedure text for students to refer to as an example.
2. Pair Writing – Have the students work in pairs to create a procedure text of a topic of their choice using one of the scaffolds. Pairs can then share their writing with another pair for feedback and discussion.
3. Independent Writing – Allow students to select a procedural writing template of their choice to write a simple procedure text independently. These could be used for formative assessment purposes to see how well students are grasping the purpose, structural elements and language features of the text type.
