Examples of Procedure Writing for Lower Primary

Text structure is a key feature of any genre of writing. When introducing a text type to our students for the first time, it is important to highlight structural features. When it comes to procedural writing, this includes features such as:

  • The aim or goal of the procedure
  • The equipment required
  • The steps that must be followed

This set of 6 cut-and-paste worksheets has been designed by our experienced teacher team to familiarise your students with these structural features as they use the components provided to build a procedure text. Each text contains an aim (the title), a list of equipment and a series of steps with accompanying illustrations. Students are required to:

  • Cut out all the structural components of the procedure (which have been jumbled).
  • Read each component, then arrange them in a logical order.
  • Build the procedural text by pasting all the components onto a blank piece of paper.

This pack of procedural writing examples contains the following texts:

  • How to Brush Your Teeth
  • How to Cross a Road Safely
  • How to Make Fairy Bread
  • How to Make a Milkshake
  • How to Make Pancakes
  • How to Wash Your Hands

All examples are written in simple, age-appropriate language, making them suitable for whole-class, small-group or independent work.

Build Examples of Procedural Writing

These examples of procedural writing have been designed to teach your students about the structural features of simple procedures. Here are some ways you might like to use these worksheets in your classroom:

  • Whole-Class Activity – As a class, vote on which procedural text example to use. Work collaboratively to build the procedure text by correctly arranging the components, then paste the pieces on a large piece of coloured cardboard. Display the text on your class bulletin board for the remainder of your procedural writing unit.
  • Small-Group Activity – Break your class into seven groups and provide each group with a different example of procedure writing from the worksheet pack. Have the groups work together to build their procedure text example. When the groups are finished, have a representative from each group share their text with the rest of the class.
