Base Ten Block Matching Cards for Number Recognition

This set of base ten block matching cards provides students practise matching numerals to their base ten block representations for 40 random numbers between 100 and 1000. The resource includes a set of number cards and the matching base ten block cards, for a total of 80 cards. Also provided are instructions for five different possible uses for this resource, including:

  • Base Ten Buddy– Students find the “Base Ten Buddy” who has the card matching the amount represented on their own card.
  • “I Have, Who Has?” Game– Students call out what amount is represented on their card, and the student with the match answers. Play continues around the room.
  • Memory Game– Students play a memory matching game with the card pairs of your choice.
  • War Card Game– Students flip over cards to see who has the higher amount — winner takes all!
  • Base Ten Block Build– Students use real base ten blocks to build the number shown on their card and then check their answer against the base ten block card.

Many more uses for this resource exist as well; get creative with your students! These cards also pair wonderfully with our Base Ten Block Matching Cards (Numbers 1 – 120).

One Manipulative, Many Benefits

Base ten blocks are a fantastic tool for young mathematicians as they provide a visual way to understand foundational maths concepts. Here are several examples of what base ten blocks can do for your students:

  • Build Number Sense: Using base ten blocks allows students to explore and understand the relationships between numbers.
  • Understand Place Value: Base ten blocks provide concrete representations of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands, facilitating deeper understanding.
  • Model Number Operations: Students can physically combine or separate blocks to model addition and subtraction problems, reinforcing this concept.
  • Engage Students: The physical and interactive nature of base ten blocks makes maths more engaging and less abstract.
