Name That 3D Shape!

Most primary students are familiar with the overarching concept of a 3D shape. After all, these objects are to be found everywhere in our immediate environments! Think of household items such as books, cans of drink, boxes of food, balls and so on. But do they know the mathematical names of these familiar objects? Some students may, but the vast majority probably don’t!

That is why teachers must explicitly teach the mathematical names of these familiar objects. That’s where we can help!

Explore 3D Shapes With a Digital Activity

This engaging digital activity has been designed to support your students to recognise and name familiar three-dimensional shapes in the environment.

Students are presented with an image of an object from the real world, along with three possible names of what that 3D shape is called. When they choose the correct answer, students are provided with a list of properties for that 3D object.

The 3D shapes included in this activity include:

  • cube
  • cone
  • triangular prism
  • rectangular prism
  • square-based pyramid
  • triangular-based pyramid
  • sphere
  • cylinder.

Hi, I can not get the game to work. It only shows me the first PP page then says slide has ended. Could you add more directions for use please?

Hi Jessica, Sorry that you are having some issues with this PowerPoint. I have downloaded it and it seems to be working fine for me. Could I please check what version of PowerPoint you are using? Thank you, Melissa

Thanks for this! My students always love to make connections of 3D objects to everyday life and this PowerPoint would be perfect to keep them highly engaged.
