Why Do We Celebrate Remembrance Day?
Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, began after World War I. It started on November 11, 1918, when a peace agreement was signed, ending the war. This day was chosen to remember the soldiers who fought and sacrificed during the war. In 1954, it was renamed Remembrance Day to honour all veterans, not just from World War I, and to thank them for protecting our freedom and peace. Now, every November 11th, we honour and appreciate all the men and women who have served in the Australian armed forces.
Write Remembrance Day Acrostic Poems for Your Classroom Display!
This printable template is perfect for using as a foundation for your Remembrance Day hallway display! This resource download includes two acrostic poem templates for students to use to write their own descriptive and informational acrostic poems commemorating those who serve in the armed forces. We’ve also included a Remembrance Day Reflection sheet using the same template if you prefer not to write the poems.
To use, have your students select the male or female solder template they prefer, then use the letters in the word REMEMBER to write their acrostic poem.
Help students struggling to generate their ideas and put it into writing by:
- Providing students with a mind map template so that they can get any ideas down onto paper first.
- Hold a class discussion about Remembrance Day and what it means to everyone within the group before completing the activity. We recommend charting some main ideas and adjectives describing soldiers for students to use when they start to write their own poems.
