Australia has three levels of government – local government, state government and federal government. Each level of government has a specific role and provides specific services to members of the Australian public.
State governments in Australia sit underneath the federal government and above local governments. Australia has six state parliaments and two territory parliaments (known as legislative assemblies). State governments are led by the premier (states) or the chief minister (territories).
