Explore the roles and responsibilities of state and territory governments around Australia with this differentiated cloze passage worksheet.

Australian State Government… Explained!

The majority of primary-school students can tell you that Australia has three levels of government – local, state and federal. But could these students tell you what each of these levels of government is responsible for? Unless they have been specifically taught these distinct roles and responsibilities, they probably couldn’t!

This cloze passage worksheet has been designed to consolidate your students’ understanding of the role and responsibilities of Australian state and territory governments. It contains a passage of text with 16 words missing. Students must use their knowledge and understanding of Australian state and territory governments to complete the passage by adding the correct words to the blank spaces.

An answer key is included with your download to make marking fast and easy!

Two Differentiated Versions of This State Government Worksheet

We know how challenging it is for teachers to adapt learning materials to meet the needs of all students in the class. That is why we’ve provided two differentiated versions of this state government cloze passage. We hope this eases some of the workload when it comes to providing targeted instruction to your high-flying and your less-confident students.

  • Version 1 – Students choose the best word from the word bank provided to add to the blank spaces in the cloze passage.
  • Version 2 – No word bank is provided. Students add words of their own choosing to the blank spaces in the cloze passage.

In addition to independent student work time, why not use this worksheet as a:

  • Whole-class activity (via smartboard)
  • Collaborative group task
  • Homework activity
  • Summative assessment

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing on thick card and slipping it into a dry-erase sleeve. Students can record their answers with a whiteboard marker, then erase and reuse them.

Alternatively, project the cloze passage onto your whiteboard and have students write the answers into their workbooks.
