Decode Onset and Rime Words with this Roll and Cover Activity

This set of onset and rime roll and colour worksheets with matching dice is the perfect hands-on addition to your phonics lesson kit. The following short vowel onset and rime word lists have been included:

  • Short a – hat, can, pan, mad, fan, man, bat, cat, mat, sad, map, sat
  • Short e – bed, keg, peg, beg, pet, led, leg, wed, ten, pen, wet, bet
  • Short i – lid, pin, pig, sit, sip, fig, lit, bit, lip, bin, wig
  • Short o – log, dot, cot, dog, hop, pot, hot, lot, cog, cob
  • Short u – cut, bun, bug, tub, tug, hut, nun, nut, rug, cub

In this activity, students need to roll two dice – one with some onset letters and one with some rime letters, then they need to blend each showing element on the dice together and if it’s a real word they then need to colour that matching picture on the worksheet.

Easy Onset and Rime Activities to Match

Along with onset and rime games, onset and rime activities and onset and rime worksheets, there are also a number of different ways you can get your students blending onset and rime words together simply using the whiteboard in your classroom, here are some suggestions:

  • Whole class word building activity – draw a line down the middle of the white board and one one side write several onsets and the other side write rimes. Ask students to come up to the board and connect an onset with a rime to form a word.
  • Fill in the blank – write an onset on the board and then ask students to fill in the blank with different onsets.
  • Word pattern activity – write a word such as dog on the board, then ask students to come up with other onset to replace the ‘d’ to make more words.
