Teaching Your Students How to Round to the Nearest Hundred?

As students begin to learn about different place values, chances are, rounding is a skill they will come across. Students first learn to round to the nearest 10 and 100, then to larger place values and even with decimals. If you are looking for an easy way to teach your students how to round to the nearest 100, take a quick peek below to make teaching this skill a breeze!

If you want to round numbers to the nearest hundred, take a quick peek at the tens digit and determine whether to keep or bump up the hundreds digit.

Look at the Tens Digit – Identify the tens digit of the number you want to round. If the tens digit is 0 to 4, you’ll keep the hundreds digit the same. If the tens digit is 5 to 9, you’ll increase the hundreds digit by 1.

Adjust the Ones and Tens Digits – After you’ve decided what to do with the hundreds digit, you’ll change the tens and ones digits to 0.

Rounding Numbers Fun in the Classroom

Some poor little dogs have lost their bones! Encourage your students to save the day for these canine friends with this teacher-created rounding worksheet designed for year 2 and 3 students.

The students must work out which bone belongs to which dog by rounding to the nearest hundred. They then use a coloured line to match the correct dog to the correct bone.

If you want to add a bit of a challenge for your students, consider using the editable version and adjusting the numbers to include those with 4 or 5 digits.
