Rounding Numbers Game

Are your students in need of additional practise with rounding whole numbers? Teach Starter has created a printable board game you can use with your year 4  and 5 students. Students will practise how to round 6-digit numbers to a given place.

Here are the basic steps to round a whole number:

  • Locate the place value to which you want to round the number. For example, if you are going to round to the nearest ten, locate the tens place.
  • Look at the digit to the right of the place value you’re rounding to. If it’s 5 or more, round up. If it’s less than 5, round down.

This board game provides a fun and interactive way to practise and reinforce key mathematical concepts while also encouraging teamwork and friendly competition.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your maths lessons.

Use this board game to enhance learning through guided maths groups or as a maths centre activity.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

For students who need extra support, provide them with a laminated place value chart to write the numbers and identify the place in which they are rounding to.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For students who need a challenge, encourage students to round to a different place other than what is indicated on the game card.
