How to Round Large Numbers
Do your students need a quick rounding guide? Here are the basic steps to round a whole number:
- Locate the place value to which you want to round the number.
- Look at the digit to the right of the place value you’re rounding to. If it’s 5 or more, round up. If it’s less than 5, round down.
- Write the number that you’ve rounded to the place value you found in step 1. To round up, increase this digit by 1. To round down, leave the digit as is. If rounding up makes this digit 10, carry over to the next digit.
