Rounding Using a Number Line

Many strategies exist to teach students how to round large numbers,  some of which are listed in the presentation. Here is a step-by-step guide to rounding using a number line:

  1. Find the digit in the place value that the number will be rounded to.
  2. Identify the two benchmark numbers between which the number being rounded falls. (For example, if 103,598 is being rounded to the nearest thousand, the two benchmark numbers will be 103,000 and 104,000.)
  3. Plot the benchmark numbers and the midpoint (in this case, 103,500) on a number line.
  4. Plot the number being rounded on the number line.
  5. Whichever benchmark number the number being rounded to is closer to is the answer. Numbers that land exactly in the middle are rounded up to the right.

Teaching rounding with a number line is a great way to promote understanding and visualisation as students learn this essential skill.
