Create Number Patterns to Win! 🏆

This fun card game is perfect for maths groups! Students compete to be the first to make three number patterns that follow a specific rule.

A ‘Go Fish’ style game with a twist. Students are dealt seven regular number cards as well as one secret number pattern card. They must create a pattern with four numbers that follows the rule on the secret number pattern card to score a point.

This game promotes:

  • problem solving
  • algebraic reasoning
  • higher-order thinking skills.

Through this activity, students will show that they can continue and create number patterns resulting from addition and subtraction.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

Use this number pattern game to enhance learning through guided maths groups, student free time or as a fast finisher activity.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Start students who need help understanding the concepts of the game with pattern card 3 or 4. These cards have the sequence of numbers that they need, with one missing number. The patterns on these cards are counting up by 1.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For a challenge, once students have finished playing the game, task them with creating a number pattern for every secret number pattern card using the number cards and the wild cards. Can it be done?

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students
