Self-Monitoring Reading Activities Task Cards

These task cards have been created with some Self-Monitoring reading activities that students can do during small group activities, individually, or as a whole class exploration. 

Throughout these activities, students will begin to:

  • Pause and reflect on their reading progress.
  • Use strategies to clarify confusing parts of a text.
  • Identify key ideas, make predictions, and ask questions.
  • Strengthen their ability to self-monitor and adjust their reading approach.
  • Become confident readers who comprehend what they are reading,

The following monitoring comprehension strategies are included in these activities and include four pieces of text to practise each of these strategies:

  • Stop and check
  • Context clues
  • Visualising
  • Ask questions
  • Connections
  • Summarising

How to Use these Self Monitoring Activities in the Classroom

Encourage students to become active, thoughtful readers with these engaging monitoring comprehension activities by:

  • Having students explore each of these strategies as they learn them as a whole class.
  • Explore the activities through small groups during English groups.
  • Send home an activity for students to complete for homework.
  • Use the activity task cards in a visual display and sort them under posters explaining each of these strategies.
  • Students can work in pairs to discuss their reading, share moments when they realise they need to clarify meaning, and exchange strategies for improving their comprehension.
