Looking for a Sight Word Board Game?

Are you looking for a game your students can play to help them read and write some of the most common high-frequency words in the English language? Look no further than Teach Starter’s original creation, Sight Word Splash!

This water-themed game features some adorable penguins who need help to reach the bottom of a waterslide through successful recognition of sight words. Here’s how to play:

  1. Roll the dice and move along the waterslide.
  2. Say the word you have landed on, then write it on the worksheet.
  3. If you cannot say the word, your partner has a chance to steal it!
  4. Keep reading and writing words until you reach the bottom of the waterslide.

The download includes two versions of this sight word board game containing different high-frequency words. Both full-colour and black-and-white versions are available.

The Benefits of This Sight Word Game

Becoming familiar with common high-frequency words and how to decode them has many benefits for our students. Here are just a handful of these:

  • Repetition for Recognition – Many high-frequency words cannot be easily sounded out, so regular practice is key to mastering them. By working on sight words regularly, students receive the repetition they need to recognise these words quickly and automatically, which is essential for fluent reading.
  • Building Confidence – As students become more familiar with high-frequency words, they begin to read more smoothly and with greater comprehension. This confidence carries over into the classroom, making them more eager to participate in reading activities.
  • Gamification for Maximum Impact – Most teachers are aware of how impactful games can be when it comes to increasing engagement with learning. The element of friendly competition this game provides will increase student enjoyment as they read, write and learn common sight words.
