Identify silent letters in words with this set of six decoding worksheets.
Decode and Detect Those Sneaky Silent Letters!
Silent letters are everywhere in the English language. These imposter letters jump along for the ride but don’t make any sound in the words they are tagging along with!
Encourage your students to become silent letter detectors with this set of six worksheets. Each worksheet contains seven sentences focused on a particular silent letter or letters. The students are required to:
- Read the sentence.
- Identify the word containing the focus silent letter.
- Highlight the word.
The silent letters addressed in this worksheet pack are k, w, h, b, l, n and t.
Tips for Scaffolding and Differentiation
Check out these suggestions for providing additional support or extension to your diverse range of learners.
For students who may be having trouble identifying which word in the sentence contains the focus silent letter, read each word in the sentence slowly and clearly. Identify words containing the focus letter, then segment these words into their phonemes. In which word is the focus letter not making a sound?
Encourage fast finishers to write their own sentences containing silent letter words. Students can swap these with a partner once completed.
