Learning Present and Past Tense in Regular Verbs
This teaching resource has been created to help introduce simple present tense and simple past tense to your students. A great matching activity that is versatile and can be used in a variety of ways.
Print, cut out, and laminate the cards. These could be used in the following ways in the classroom:
- Give each student a card. Encourage the students to make groups of three, consisting of the image, the present tense sentence and the past tense sentence.
- As a class, group the sentences according to whether they are present tense or past tense.
- Using the cards as examples, allow the students to create their own present tense and past tense sentences, based on a picture they have drawn.
Tips for Teaching Kids Correct Verb Tense Usage
Looking for some more activities to help kids understand verb tense? Here are some suggestions:
- Make sure you start with simple present, past and future tense. For example – Present: I play, Past: I played and Future: I will play.
- Introduce time markers to your students. Use words like ‘yesterday’, ‘today’, and ‘tomorrow’. For example – I played soccer, I play soccer and I will play soccer.
- Practice with real-life scenarios, when kids talk about their daily routines, past or future events they are then encouraged to use the correct tense.
- Mark events on a timeline and have kids describe them using the correct tense.
