A Hands-On Game for Practicing Plural and Singular Subject to Verb Agreement

The rules of subject-verb agreement are clear. Verbs change depending on whether the subject of a sentence is singular or plural. It can often be a struggle for our students to make their subjects and verbs agree, especially when using singular and plural subjects in their sentences.

This plural and singular subject to verb agreement matching game has been designed by our expert teacher team to help reinforce your students’ understanding of how subjects and verbs must agree in number. It contains 18 sentence cards and 18 verb cards. Students are required to match each sentence to the correct verb. For example:

The snake slither/slithers along the dusty ground. (Sentence card)

Slithers (Verb card)

These two cards make a match!

This resource contains:

  • Instruction page
  • 36 matching cards
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

This resource downloads as a full-colour PDF or editable Google Slides file. Whether you’re introducing the concept for the first time or reviewing it later in the term, this resource offers a practical and engaging way to practise a very tricky grammar rule.

Creative Classroom Activities for Subject and Verb Agreement

Looking for some ideas as to how you might use this subject and verb agreement matching game in your classroom? Here are some suggestions from our team you might like to consider:

  • Memory Match – Turn the cards face down and play as a classic memory game. Students flip over two cards at a time and try to find the matching verb and sentence pair. This builds focus and reinforces connections.
  • Sort and Classify – Before matching, ask students to sort the verb cards into singular and plural piles. Then have them read the sentence cards and name the pile in which they will find the matching verb.
  • Partner Pairs – Hand out sentence cards to one group and verb cards to another. Students mingle and read their card aloud, trying to find their perfect match. This makes a great movement break for your students!
