What Are The 6 Traits of Writing?

The V.O.I.C.E.S. 6 traits of writing strategy is a mnemonic device designed to help writers remember essential aspects of good writing. Each letter in V.O.I.C.E.S. stands for a different element that contributes to stronger piece of writing. Here’s what each letter represents:

The six traits are:

  • Voice: This trait reflects the writer’s personal tone and style. It shows how the writer’s personality and sense of humour come through the writing and engage the reader.
  • Organisation: This trait addresses the flow of the writing. It includes the logical sequence of ideas, the opening, the closing, and the transitions between ideas.
  • Ideas: This trait focuses on the central message and the content of the writing. It involves the clearness, focus, and depth of the ideas given.
  • Conventions: This trait focuses on the mechanical correctness of the writing. It includes grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraph structure.
  • Excellent Word Choice: This trait highlights the use of precise and effective language. It involves selecting the right words, academic language, and phrases to convey meaning and engage the reader.
  • Sentence Fluency: This trait deals with the flow and rhythm of sentences. It includes variations in sentence structure (simple, compound, complex) , variety, and the overall readability of the writing.

Each trait provides a different lens through which early writers can view and improve their writing, making it easier to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
