Let’s Be Social – Stories for the Classroom
Teaching children to be good listeners is an important skill that can help them to develop better relationships, improve their communication skills and succeed in various aspects of life.
Being a good listener is important for several reasons, including:
Building strong relationships: Listening is a key component of effective communication, and strong relationships are built on effective communication. By listening well, you show others that you value and respect their thoughts and feelings, which can help to strengthen your relationships with them.
Learning and growing: Listening allows you to learn from others and expand your knowledge and understanding of different perspectives, ideas and experiences. By listening to others, you can gain valuable insights and information that can help you to grow.
Avoiding misunderstandings: Poor listening can lead to misunderstandings, which can cause confusion, frustration and even conflict. By being a good listener, you can ensure that you understand what others are saying and can respond appropriately.
Resolving conflicts: Good listening skills can help you to resolve conflicts by allowing you to understand the perspectives of all parties involved. By listening carefully to each person’s concerns, you can work together to find a solution that meets everyone’s needs.
Building trust: When you listen well, you demonstrate trustworthiness and reliability. People are more likely to trust and respect someone who takes the time to listen to them.
Teach Starter has created a printable mini-book to help your students read about what it means to be a good listener. Each page is designed in a simple manner with real-life photographs to help students make connections and understand the examples. In this mini-book, students will learn important points such as:
- Look at others when they speak to you
- Reply to others when being spoken to
- We make others happy when we listen to them
The last page of the mini-book also poses a question with three picture choices for students to choose from as their answer.
