Practise spelling and building words that need double consonants when adding suffixes with a word-building activity.
Build Double Consonant Words with Ease! Pocket Chart Cards
Use this resource in your reading centre, as a guided reading activity, or as a whole class exercise (see below) to practise building words with root words and suffixes.
This printable word-building resource focuses on words that require a double consonant when adding suffixes. Students will match a base word to a suffix card and add a consonant to create a new word. We recommend using these cards individually or in small group pocket chart lessons.
Scaffolding + Extension Tips
Challenge students who already understand the concept to use the new words in a sentence or explain the meaning of the base word, suffix, and new word.
Support students who need help understanding the concepts by assigning peer pairs to build new words with suffixes and root words.
More Suffix Exercises
Use this resource as independent practise for fast finishers and full-class learning opportunities like scoot activities, lesson reviews, comprehension assessments, and more.
✍️ Write the Room (Scoot Activity)
Hang sheets of chart paper around the room and post a suffix card above each one. Individually or with a partner, have students rotate around the room, adding a base word that can be used with the suffix.
