Spelling Spinner – A Fun & Engaging Spelling Homework Activity

Make spelling homework exciting with a Spelling Spinner Game! This independent spelling game turns spelling homework into a game, keeping students engaged while reinforcing word recognition and spelling accuracy. Instead of rote memorization, the Spelling Spinner adds an element of fun by incorporating chance, choice, and even data collection! Whether used in the classroom or as a take-home assignment, this printable spelling spinner activity makes assigning spelling homework easy for teachers and enjoyable for kids.

Have Fun With a Spin and Spell Game!

Turn spelling practise into a gamified learning experience with the Spin and Spell game! Here’s how it works:

  • Students choose 10 or 12 spelling words from their word list.
  • Using a paper clip and pencil, they create a DIY spinner on the page.
  • They spin to land on a number and write the corresponding word above it.
  • The process is repeated 20 times.
  • After all the spins are complete, students colour their stacks of words to create a bar graph, which helps them review a critical maths skill while reinforcing spelling.

We have included two variations of this worksheet featuring the option for ten or twelve spelling words. You will also find both portrait and landscape layouts to better meet your students’ needs. This activity combines spelling, probability, and data analysis, making it a great spelling practise tool that blends maths and literacy.
