A set of addition dominoes to use in the classroom when applying the split strategy.

Split Strategy Activity

The split strategy involves breaking down numbers into smaller parts to simplify the addition process. By incorporating these dominoes, an engaging and tactile manipulative, students can develop a deeper understanding of numbers, enhance their computational skills and foster a love for mathematics. The addition sums featured on these dominoes have been created specifically for students to use the split strategy.

How to Play Split Strategy Dominoes

  • Shuffle the dominoes and place them face down in the playing area.
  • Split the dominoes equally among the players.
  • The player with the domino with “Split Strategy Dominoes” in the starting position lays down that domino in the middle of the playing area.
  • Take turns matching the addition sum with the correct answer while explaining how they used the split strategy to work it out with the group.
