Problem and Solution Matching Activity for Small Group Work

This collection of matching cards has been created to help support the teaching and learning of narrative elements and early readers comprehension skills. Students being able to identify the problem and solution in a given text is crucial to their reading and comprehension skills. This matching activity aims to focus primarily on the vocabulary of problem and solution to ensure students have a full understanding of this concept.

The following items are included in these differentiated problem and solution matching cards resource::

  • A set of cards with problems and solutions with matching images to support students in understanding the text.
  • A set of cards with text only for those students who are able to read and comprehend short sentences.
  • Problem and solution mat.
  • Problem and solution worksheet.
  • Answer key.

Problem and Solution Activities

Looking for more ways to use these matching cards in the classroom? Here are some suggestions from our resident teachers:

  1. Small Group Matching Challenge – Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of matching cards. The groups can race to see who can correctly match all of the cards the fastest.
  2. Problem and Solution Relay – Set up the two headings (problem and solution) at different spots around the classroom. Have students take turns picking a card and running to place it under the correct heading. This adds movement to the lesson and makes learning more dynamic.
  3. Story Extension – After matching the cards, challenge students to come up with a character and setting for a story about a chosen problem and solution match.
