Encourage your students to identify story settings in the books they read with this brochure template.
Exploring the Setting of a Story
Looking for a creative way for your students to share their knowledge and understanding of setting in the stories they read? Why not create a brochure about them!
This double-sided brochure template is the perfect resource for students to record information about the settings of the texts they are engaging with.
The brochure includes space for the students to record the setting of seven different texts they have read. They do this in two different ways:
- Recording the title of the book, then listing the ‘where’ and ‘when’ that constitute the setting of the story.
- Recording the title of the book, then using the senses of sound, sight, touch and smell to describe the setting of the story.
The beauty of this resource is its versatility! The brochure can be used with any picture book, guided reader or comprehension text. It can also be used for texts whether they have been read to the student or read independently.
Tips for Extension and Support
Catering for a diverse range of learners in your classroom? We hear you! We suggest the following differentiation strategies to support the diverse needs of your learners:
- Extend Your High-Flying Students – Challenge your more-confident students to use figurative language, such as similes and metaphors, when describing the settings of the texts they have read.
- Support Your Less-Confident Students – It may be unrealistic to expect less-confident students to complete the brochure independently. Choose a group of targeted students and work with them to collaboratively complete one section of the brochure. Students may then feel more confident to attempt a section of the brochure independently.
