A Subitising Game Students Will “TOAD”ally Love

This subitising game for two to eight students will have your students “hopping” at the chance to battle their classmates to see whose subitising skills reign supreme!

This resource includes:

  • An instruction guide
  • Eight froggy game pieces
  • A full-colour game board
  • A black-and-white game board

We recommend printing the game board and pieces on cardboard and laminating them for longevity.

Directions:

  1. Give each student a froggy game piece, and each group a die and a game board.
  2. Players place their pieces at the starting lily pad.
  3. The first player rolls the die. If the number on the die matches the number on the next lily pad, they move forward. If it does not, their turn is over, and play continues to the next player.
  4. Students take turns rolling the die trying to match the next lilypad on the path. First player to reach the finish wins!

Why is it Wise to Subitise?

Learning to subitise small collections is a benchmark skill as it opens the door for mastery of many more maths concepts, including:

  • Number Recognition – Subitising with many different objects and configurations reinforces that numbers can take many forms.
  • Counting – Subitising helps fortify the concept of one-to-one correspondence, which students need to count effectively.
  • Mental Computation – Learning to subitise helps students to quickly mentally combine or separate groups.
  • Comparing Numbers – Students proficient at subitising can quickly compare two groups of objects.
