Subitising Mazes for Young Mathematicians

Our subitising mazes are an engaging way to ensure your students get enough practise subitising small collections. Students will enjoy helping the characters make their way to the end of these mazes and may not realise they are learning in the process!

This worksheet set includes the following:

  • Subitising Maze (Numbers 1 – 3)
  • Subitising Maze (Numbers 4 – 6)
  • Subitising Maze (Numbers 7 – 10)

An answer key for each maze is also included so students can check their work. These mazes work well for independent practise, stations, guided groups, or fast finishers.

What Is Subitising NOT?

It’s easy to confuse the skill of subitising with several other skills and concepts. Here is a list of things that are NOT the same as subitising:

  • Counting: Subitising involves recognising quantities instantly without counting.
  • Estimation: Subitising requires an exact amount, whereas estimation involves making an approximate guess.
  • Numeral Recognition: Recognising numerals (like “4”) is different from subitising, which is about visualising quantities.
  • One-to-One Correspondence: This skill involves matching a single item to a single number, unlike subitising, which requires instant recognition of the quantity in groups.

However, these skills have two things in common: They are essential for early learners, and we have resources to help you teach them all!
