What is Subitising?
Subitising is the ability to instantly recognise the number of objects in a set without counting them. If you are unfamiliar with this term, you are not alone! The word “subitise” has only been around since 1949 when the word was coined by a research team led by psychologist E.L.Kaufman. It is derived from the Latin word “subitus,” which means “sudden.”
Subitising is an important skill for early learners. It can play an essential part in developing students’ number sense and understanding of quantity. Children skilled at subitising often have an easier time counting, adding, subtracting, and problem-solving.
Luckily there are many ways to teach your students to subitise! Be sure to check out the many subitising resources we have here at Teach Starter to get you started.
