Practice 2-digit subtraction with this set of 18 task cards.
Make subtracting 2-digit numbers a fun activity your students can’t wait to get their hands on!
How to use these subtraction task cards
Through this activity, students will show they can subtract within 100 using strategies to find the difference between 2-digit numbers.
Students will review each subtraction problem task card and solve for the difference, writing their answer in the corresponding space on the provided recording sheet.
An answer key is included with this download so that students can self-check their recording sheets.
Additional support and extension
For students who need some additional support in mastering the subtraction algorithm, it may be beneficial to provide manipulatives such as base-ten blocks, a number line or a hundreds chart to assist with the calculations.
Challenge those students who already demonstrated mastery of the concept to add an additional digit to each number in the algorithm, to make it a 3-digit number. Have the students solve each question, then check their answers with a calculator.
Additional applications of the resource
Here are some other ways you might like to use these task cards in your maths lesson.
SCOOT ACTIVITY
Place the task cards around the room in numerical order and give each student a recording sheet. Assign each student a number to start. Give students an appropriate amount of time to complete the subtraction algorithm, then say, “SCOOT.” At this time, the students will rotate to the next card. Continue in this manner until students have made it through all of the cards.
EXIT ACTIVITY
After you go through your subtraction lesson, pass out the task cards to students and have them calculate the sum independently. Provide them with a sticky note so that they can turn in their answer as a formative assessment.
MIRROR GAME
Divide the students into two groups and have them sit down in lines facing each other. Use your smartboard or projector to show a task card and give the students time to solve the problem. On your cue, have the students turn their boards around so their partner can see their answer. If both students in a pair have the correct answer, their team gets two points. If one has the correct answer, the team gets one point.
