Get your students subtracting fractions with like denominators using this set of task cards focusing on a variety of strategies.
Explore Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators
Operations with fractions, such as addition and subtraction, can be a challenging concept for students to grasp. Thankfully, there are a number of different strategies that students can apply when faced with these types of problems. These include:
- Bar models
- Fraction circles
- Number lines
- The standard algorithm
This set of task cards provides your students with the opportunity to practise subtracting fractions with like denominators using a variety of the strategies listed above. Pictorial models and number lines can be very helpful for students when they are learning how to subtract fractions with like denominators. They provide a clear representation of the separate parts of the whole which can make the abstract concept of fractions seem less daunting. Here are some examples of the types of questions that can be found on the task cards:
- Use the bar model to write and solve a subtraction equation.
- Use the fraction circles to write and solve a subtraction equation.
- Use the number line to write and solve a subtraction equation.
- Find the difference between the pair of fractions.
This adding fractions with like denominators resource includes:
- Instruction Page
- Task Cards (set of 24)
- Recording Sheet
- Answer Page
We have provided an easy-print PDF or an editable Google Slides version of these subtracting fractions with like denominators task cards.
This set of subtracting fractions with like denominators task cards would make a great addition to any maths lesson focused on teaching students different strategies they can use when completing subtraction operations with fractions.
Multiple Uses for These Subtracting Fractions Task Cards
There are many ways in which these task cards can be used to enhance your lessons on subtracting like fractions. Here are a few suggestions from our experienced teacher team:
- Scoot Activity – Place the cards around the room in numerical order and give each student a recording sheet. Assign students or pairs to a starting point card. Give students time to review the card and record their answers in the corresponding space on their paper. Students will rotate to the next card when you say, “SCOOT!” Continue in this manner until students return to their starting point.
- Task Card Relay – Divide the class into teams and set up task cards at different stations. Each team member must run to a station, solve the subtraction problem, and run back to report the answer to their team. The first team to correctly identify all the answers on their recording sheet, wins!
- Magic Minute – Set a timer for one minute. Show the class each task card in turn. If a student knows the answer, have them raise their hand and share their response. A correct response earns a point for the class. See how many correct responses the class can tally before the timer runs out!
