What Are the Benefits of Ten Frames?

A variety of benefits exist for using single and double ten frames in the classroom, including:

  • Building Number Sense: Ten frames allow students to visualise and work with numbers in a structured way.
  • Enhancing Number Relationships: Students can easily see how numbers relate to 10 and 20 when using these frames.
  • Facilitating Addition and Subtraction: Adding and subtracting objects from the frames makes teaching simple addition and subtraction a visual affair.
  • Promoting an Understanding of Place Value: Ten frames support teaching place value concepts as students can see numbers broken down into tens and ones. For example, 13 can be shown as one full ten frame plus three counters into another.

  1. Download the PDF or Google Slides.
  2. Print the frame you would like students to use, or print them all for variety!
