Explore the Meaning of the Australian Citizenship Pledge

It is important for all Australian citizens to understand our responsibilities and privileges, whether we are Australian by birth or by choice.

People who have made the decision to become an Australian citizen display their acceptance of and commitment to the values of our nation by reciting the Australian citizenship pledge. The pledge is a short but powerful statement that affirms this shared understanding of our values and publicly voices one’s pride, loyalty and commitment to Australia.

This cloze passage worksheet has been designed to familiarise your students with the Australian citizenship pledge. It contains a section of the pledge with 12 words missing. Students must use their knowledge and understanding of the pledge to complete the passage by adding the correct words to the blank spaces.

An answer key is included with your download to make marking fast and easy!

Tips for Extension and Scaffolding

Catering for a diverse range of learners in your classroom? We hear you! Check out these great ideas to maximise the impact of this activity for learners of all abilities:

  • Challenge High-Flying Students – Once they have completed the activity, challenge your more capable students to create a glossary of terms for the words used in the cloze. This will deepen students’ understanding of the pledge and the deliberate choices for the terms included in it.
  • Support Less-Confident Students – Simplify the task for less-confident students by reducing the number of words they need to fill in. Be sure to choose the words of the greatest importance that you wish them to engage with and understand!

In addition to independent student work time, why not use this worksheet as a:

  • Whole-class activity (via smartboard)
  • Collaborative group task
  • Homework activity
  • Summative assessment
