Practise Number Forms With a Place Value Game!

Are you looking for a place value game that strengthens your students’ understanding of different number forms? This memory-style game will encourage students to find numbers represented in different ways. Each match includes:

• MAB
• numerals
• words
• expanded form.

To play, shuffle the cards and spread them out face-down on the playing area. When it is a player’s turn, they choose any two cards to flip over. If the two cards are a match, the player will take the cards and keep them in their own separate pile. If the two cards are not a match, the player turns the cards back over in their original location. Each number has 3 potential matches, but only 2 cards will be turned over at a time. Four matching cards include 1 numerical form card, 1 base ten blocks card, 1 expanded form card and 1 word form card. Any 2 matches are acceptable. Continue to play until all matches have been found.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts: 

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Help students who need support by limiting the number of matches required. Rather than have 4 matching cards, limit it to either 2 or 3 cards. Additionally, invite students to reference previous assignments, posters, and anchor charts.

➕ Challenge Fast Finishers

For students who need a bit of a challenge, encourage students to write a number and then trade papers with a partner. Each student can then write and draw the different number forms.

✍️ Write the Room (Scoot Activity)

Hang sheets of chart paper around the room and post a card above each one. Individually or with a partner, have students rotate around the room, adding an additional number form to the paper.
